Martingrove wins city title, moves on to OFSAA

Highly ranked Father Henry Carr eliminated

Etobicoke will only have one high school perusing OFSAA dreams in boys basketball this year.

Martingrove Collegiate quietly capped off an undefeated regular and post season in last Thursday's Toronto District School Board (TDSB) triple-A final with an exciting 55-53 win over North York's Emery Collegiate.

Martingrove's Matthew Wright had a game-high 31 points.

Following a 10-0 regular season, Martingrove rolled off six straight post season wins, including the above mention city championship.

Previously they won their city semi 69-53 over Western Tech and their city quarterfinal 61-47 over Westview Centennial. They won their west division final 62-54 over Vaughan Road Academy, their west semi 77-65 over George Harvey and their west quarterfinal 68-44 over Silverthorn.

They'll take their impressive record into the triple-A OFSAA championships, which kick off in Ottawa on Monday, March 9.

The seedings had yet to be released.

Joining Martingrove in Ottawa will be North York's Emery Collegiate who sucked up their tough loss against Martingrove to lock up the TDSB's second spot on Monday with a 63-57 win over Western Technical.

Two other Etobicoke teams fell just one step short of making the OFSAA quad-A championships.

Father Henry Carr was considered by many to be one of the top teams in the city. Unfortunately, for Carr, however, another Catholic high school, Scarborough's Mother Teresa, was ranked even higher - with only one spot available.

And sure enough, the Catholic high school championships on Monday boiled down to those two teams with Carr losing 67-46 to Mother Teresa. Sean Giscombe led Carr with 17 points.

Father Henry Carr juniors, on the other hand, did win the Catholic junior city title with a 68-47 win over Scarborough's Pope John Paul II. Carr's Aaron Emmanuel contributed a game-high 21 points.

Back to senior action, Etobicoke's Silverthorn Collegiate also had a shot to accompany TDSB city champion Eastern Commerce to quad-A OFSAA, which gets under way Monday in Windsor, but lost a challenge match for the second spot on Monday 75-54 to West Hill. Top scorer for Silverthorn was Milos Borovcanin with 18 points.

VOLLEYBALL

Etobicoke schools from the TDSB did not manage to qualify a team for OFSAA in girls volleyball, but they did serve notice for next year. Richview Collegiate did make it to the TDSB junior finals, on Feb. 26, losing 2-0 to Scarborough's Woburn Collegiate.

HOCKEY

The TDSB's west division senior boys hockey finals were held last Feb. 27.

The tier one final was won by Richview Collegiate 2-1 over Etobicoke Collegiate. The city quarterfinals start Tuesday.

The tier two final was won by Thistletown Collegiate 7-6 over York Memorial Collegiate.

SWIMMING

The two-day OFSAA swimming championships wrap up today at the Etobicoke Olympium. See Friday's edition for story and photos.
