Effective Wednesday, April 1, TTC Metropass holders will no longer have free weekday parking at TTC-owned parking lots. At many of the TTC's 30 commuter lots, parking was free for members of the transit commission's Metropass Discount or Volume Incentive plans. With 14,000 parking spaces, 80 per cent of which are traditionally used by Metropass users, the TTC faces a yearly loss of roughly $4 million.
Now, with the TTC trying to find new revenue sources, the commission is looking at paid parking as a means of helping to balance its books.
Most lots will charge between two and four dollars per weekday, up until 3 p.m., with free parking after 3 p.m. and on weekends and holidays. Some, such as the lot at Leslie subway station, will charge as much as $12 for parking from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. and another $12 from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Parking lots and spaces typically reserved for Metropass holders will now be open to all.
