Scarborough firefighter honoured for actions in Africa

Gatensby helped injured tour guide

A Scarborough firefighter has been honoured for tending to a seriously injured tour guide while on vacation last year.

William Mark Gatensby was on a travel adventure in a remote area of Africa when he saw the tour guide fall out of their bus, which was travelling at more than 80 kilometres per hour.

Gatensby, who works out of station 214 on Meadowvale Road, not only assessed and treated the injured guide but also convinced the locals to take her to a medical clinic. The guide was eventually taken by ambulance to a hospital.

The Toronto Professional Firefighters' Association honoured Gatensby with the Roy Silver Award at a luncheon Friday at the Sheraton Hotel on Queen Street.

Firefighter Allen Watterson, from hall 223 on Dorset Road, received the Al Pearsall Award for volunteering in the Durham District School Board.

Firefighter Andrew Dowdell, of station 134 on Montgomery Avenue, was given the Bernard "Ben" Bonser Award for saving the life of a heart attack victim while off duty.
