SCARBOROUGH: Police continue to seek suspect in school shooting

Judicial authority to name youth has now expired

The judicial authority to name a young suspect in last week's shooting at a Scarborough high school has expired.

Police are still looking for the 16-year-old boy, who can no longer be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Police were given permission last Thursday to name the suspect and release his photo until Tuesday in hopes of making a quick arrest.

Another 16-year-old boy was shot in the abdomen outside Bendale Business and Technical Institute at 1555 Midland Ave. at 11:47 a.m. Sept. 16. The shooting victim, who is recovering, has been charged with robbery while armed with a firearm.

Police have also charged a second male in connection with the incident.

"We feel that it was involving some sort of a drug transaction that didn't go well and that there was a scuffle that ensued and that this gun was discharged," Det. Sgt. Rick Searl said last week.

"It (gun) was being carried and held by another party whom we are actively looking for right now. ...Our belief is that the bullet struck his accomplice, and that's not likely what his intention was."

Anyone with information is asked to call 41 Division at 416-808-4100 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
