OPP plane keeping tabs on 401

An Ontario Provincial Police plane is helping nab speeders along the 400-series highways. The Cessna 206 began patrolling the highways Tuesday morning.

OPP Const. David Woodford said the plane will focus on "hot spots" throughout the province.

Drivers caught travelling 50km/h or faster over the speed limit will lose their licences for seven days and have their vehicles impounded on the spot under new street racing legislation.

The OPP used planes to enforce traffic laws from 1965 to 1981.

More than 450 people died on OPP-patrolled roads in Ontario last year.

The Cessna 206 is a five-passenger single-engine aircraft with a range of 1,000 kilometres.
