An estimated 30,000 participants in Toronto ran, walked and raised more than $5.1 million for breast cancer research Oct. 5.
The 17th annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure raised $28.5 million across Canada.
Nationwide, the run is the largest single-day, volunteer-led event in support of breast cancer, uniting 170,000 Canadians in 55 communities across the country.
"To witness the thousands of runners, walkers and supporters who congregated at Nathan Phillips Square, all working together to create a future without breast cancer, underlines the impact of breast cancer on so many lives," said Sharon Wood, CEO of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Ontario Region in a release. "We have come a long way in our efforts to create a future without breast cancer, but more needs to be done."
Wood said the money raised will help fund breast cancer research and health promotion initiatives.
In Ontario, funding has been directed to projects at every cancer research centre in the province as well as individual communities.
The projects are making progress in breast cancer biology, primary prevention and risk factors, early detection and diagnosis, treatment, care and quality of life, education and awareness.
