Re: Give Green Party a Chance, Taylor Carr, Letter to the Editor, Etobicoke Guardian, Oct. 1, 2008
Letter writer Taylor Carr states the environment should trump the economy because "with no natural world, we cannot have the fake world we created."
The notion held by many environmentalists that the so-called "natural world" is superior to our technological-driven Earth is certainly interesting. The theory of the purity of the natural world is tested when we observe natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, viruses, diseases like as malaria and bird flu, and so on. Technology has controlled, and in certain cases such as polio, eradicated the problem outright. No one is arguing the "fake world" is perfect. Humanity is responsible for many crimes inflicted on our planet. However, we humans have also contributed much to helping our species thrive and survive.
Perhaps those who believe in the superiority of the natural world should live accordingly. No doctors if you are sick, because you might be prescribed science-created antibiotics. No dentists to attack that tooth decay or gum disease. No eye glasses because that is a product of the "fake" world.
