East York Collegiate's now annual Friday Night Lights game, scheduled for Friday, Oct. 10, provides a rare chance for the community to come out and watch high school football.
The high school football schedule is usually played mid afternoon on school days which is not convenient for many people.
But the Friday Night Lights game, which pitches the Goliaths from East York Collegiate with their traditional rivals, the Lancers from Leaside High School, kicks off when most people are getting off work.
The junior game starts at 5 p.m. and the senior game starts at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $5 with all proceeds going towards Goliaths athletics.
East York Collegiate actually trucks in lights for the game which has attracted huge numbers in the past.
East York and Leaside both play in the tier one south division and are also joined that loop this season by a third East York school, Marc Garneau Collegiate.
Other teams include defending south division champion and traditional powerhouse Northern Collegiate, Central Tech and Lawrence Park Collegiate.
East York Collegiate has also become a powerhouse.
The junior Goliaths are the defending champs and while the senior Goliaths did lose to Northern last year - both in the south division final and in the regular season encounter - the previous two years, the senior Goliaths upset Northern in the south finals and went all the way to the city finals where they, unfortunately lost on both occasions to Richview.
Last week was opening week. In senior action East York edged Lawrence Park 21-20, Leaside lost 19-0 to Central Tech and Marc Garneau lost 28-0 to Northern.
On Thursday, Oct.2, Leaside visited Lawrence Park. On Oct. 3, East York is hosting its new cross-town rival Marc Garneau at 2:30 p.m.
Also on Friday, Oct. 10 Marc Garneau is at Central Tech, 2:30 p.m.
