A local art show brings the creative visions of artists and youth together for residents to experience.
Port Union Seniors presents the Creative Visions Art Show and Sale Friday and Saturday. This event showcases visual arts by artists of all ages.
This year, Creative Visions features 250 pieces of work from artists in the community. The secret to the show's success for the past nine years, said Glenn Gabriel from the Port Union Community Centre, is "the level of artistic talent in our community."
A highlight of the annual event is the youth category. Artwork by young artists, aged 13 to 24 years old, will be judged and prizes of $150 and gift certificates will go to the work that places in the top four. The youth prizes will be awarded at the opening reception.
The artists reception is Friday at 6 p.m. and artists will be in attendance to talk about their work. Food and drinks will be served.
This year's event is in partnership with the Scarborough Arts Council. "This has helped with promotion," Gabriel said.
Creative Visions is made possible through the work of the Port Union Seniors, which is responsible for organizing and setting it up. At the seniors' centre there are five different art classes that range from painting to pottery to woodcarving.
"We have a very talented group of seniors," Gabriel said.
Also, 15 per cent of art sales from Creative Visions goes to Port Union Seniors as part of its fundraising efforts.
Creative Visions Art Show and Sale takes place at the Port Union Community Centre, 5450 Lawrence Ave. E., Friday, Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 20 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free. For details, call 416-396-4034.
