Police have arrested a man and are looking for another in the Nov. 14 murder of Colves "Jacko" Meggoe, a popular Malvern resident who helped street people.

The arrest was made Saturday morning, a day after police held a news conference to reveal the identities of two suspects.

"We are appealing to these individuals to seek legal counsel and surrender themselves to any police officer. The public is cautioned not to approach these two men. They are to be considered armed and dangerous," Det. John Biggerstaff said Friday at police headquarters. "I also have to caution anyone who aids or helps the (suspects) escape arrest that they could face a criminal charge of accessory after the fact to murder."

Meggoe, 50, was shot in the abdomen inside his house at 182 Horsley Hill Dr. southeast of Tapscott Road and Finch Avenue. He was rushed by ambulance to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre where he was pronounced dead.

Biggerstaff said Meggoe was targeted, but the homicide detective wouldn't disclose why. "The particulars of the incident will be issues at the trial, and as such, I can't really comment on them," he said.

Mano Persaud, 25, who worked at Meggoe's Melford Drive garage, said Meggoe helped him get off the street and gave him work experience. "He's a very nice guy. He's helpful to everybody," Persaud said about two hours after the murder. "He would spend his last penny for somebody who's on the street. That's the type of guy he was."

Mark Cain, 36, has been charged with first-degree murder. Jason Cain, 19, is wanted on a warrant for first-degree murder.

Biggerstaff said the two men are related but "exactly what the relationship is" hasn't yet been determined.

He said police aren't releasing photographs of the two because the images "may taint the continuing investigation."

Anyone with information is asked to call Biggerstaff at 416-808-7125, Det. Wayne Banks at 416-808-7411 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

Despite its success, people still doubt composting is actually worth doing.
