Feeding coyotes may lead to attacks, city warns

Coyotes are a common sight in the ravines and forests across the city during winter months, particularly in the west end along the Humber River. Although residents have no reason to be afraid, they should absolutely not feed coyotes or any other wild animals, said Bruce Hawkins, senior communications co-ordinator for the City of Toronto.

"If a coyote attacks someone or appears to be too comfortable with people, they should call the animal services, as it probably means that someone is inadvertently feeding them and that is something we don't want people to do" he said.

The city warns against feeding any wild animals as they are more likely to roam around populated areas if they get into the habit of finding food there.

Coyotes that wander around populated areas may approach unattended pets. It is advised that pets and children be monitored at all times if outside.

Last year, there were 228 reported incidents of coyote sightings and attacks in the city. So far this year, eight incidents involving coyotes have been reported.

Hawkins said, certain measures suggested by the city may help residents be safe from attacks.

Such precautions include not feeding the animals, keeping garbage bins tightly shut and clearing tall grass and weeds around properties to ensure that coyotes are not hiding in them.

If you do come across a coyote, wave your arms aggressively, make loud noises and throw objects in its direction, but not at it, to scare it away.

Slowly back away from the animal. Do not turn your back or attempt to run as it might provoke an attack.
