See the Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol like you've never seen it before.
Humber River Shakespeare Company's (HRSC) annual touring production returns for a fifth season this December to its original, sold-out Victorian venue Montgomery's Inn. This year's expanded tour of southern Ontario includes stops at other historic buildings and old churches, including St. Paul's Anglican Church (Runnymede) in Bloor West Village.
What began as a staged reading has evolved into a full-scale production of the poignant tale told by five actors playing 23 characters in Victorian costumes designed by Dora Award-winning Nina Okens.
"It's a really timeless, timeless classic," HSRC's artistic producer Sara Moyle said of A Christmas Carol's appeal. "Whether people are going through something that's personal or whether it's all of us bound together in poor economic times, it always tells a story that resonates with someone in the audience.
Who doesn't love a ghost story, really? That's what it is; a really, really good ghost story."
The popular production sells out each year.
A Christmas Carol comes to Montgomery's Inn, 4709 Dundas St. W. at Islington Avenue on Thursday, Dec. 8, Friday, Dec. 9 and Saturday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. There is also a 2 p.m. showing on Saturday, Dec. 10. The cast takes to St. Paul's Anglican Church (Runnymede) on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m.
Seating is limited. Visit www.humberrivershakespeare.ca to book tickets. Tickets are $15 (adults) and $10 (children).
Moyle promises the audience an "intimate" experience of the classic.
"We do all our costume changes on-stage. The set is transformed. It comes out of a Victorian chest. Everything is organic and happening in front of the audience," Moyle explained. "They're privy to backstage, frontstage. It's all one connected piece. We have a fun time doing it. We really get to connect with the audience."
