Four Scarborough squads reach Robbie finals

Four Scarborough teams managed to make it to the final round of the 42nd annual Robbie International Soccer Tournament.

However, in all four cases the local squads had to settle for second place honours.

The Robbie tournament, held last weekend, has raised more than $1 million for Cystic Fibrosis research. Teams from across Canada and around the world, including Scotland, Trinidad and Tobago, the Unied States, Alberta and Quebec competed in this year's tournament.

The North Scarborough Bulldogs U11 boys played their championship game against East York United Football Club and lost with a final score of 3-1. Benny Ampofo was the goal scorer for the Bulldogs.

In the U13 girls division, the Scarborough United Fury 1 made it to the finals and lost 4-1 against the Oakville Hurricane '95. Tiffany Smith scored the Fury's only goal.

The Wexford Wolverines U14 girls competed in the championship game against Newmarket United and lost 3-0.

In the U18 boys division, Scarborough Blizzard 1 lost 2-1 against the Brampton East Ruffriders. Ruffin Lumbria scored for the Blizzard.

Playing cricket for a cause

Cricket players will be hitting the field Saturday for their annual cricket match in honour of the late police constable Percy Cummins.

The Barbados ex-police association is hosting the event.

Cummins served as a member of the Royal Barbados police force for 11 years before immigrating to Canada and serving with the Toronto Police force for another 11 years. He is the only black officer to die in the line of duty, and was killed on Sept. 23, 1981.

The match will be held at Percy Cummins cricket grounds, at the intersection of McNichol Road and White Heather Boulevard.

The game starts at 12:30 p.m.

Scarborough goaltender signs with Central Hockey League

A Scarborough goaltender who plays Canadian university hockey with the Queens Golden Gaels has just signed a contract with the Texas-based Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League.

Ryan Gibb, 23, was a key contributor for the Gaels last season and earned the Ontario University Athletics East Most Valuable Player award.

He had a 2.86 goals against average.

He leaves his Queen's University hockey career after two seasons, having played in 46 games with a 3.12 goals against average (GAA) with two shut-outs.

"When the opportunity presented itself, I couldn't pass it up," Gibb said of his decision to pass up his final years of Canadian university hockey eligibility and turn pro.

"It's been an honour to wear the Gaels uniform and be a part of helping build a stronger hockey program. I am going to miss my teammates, but I'm excited to take a shot playing professionally."
