Mehmedovic's father, Nihad, was a former judoka in his native Yugoslavia and now works as an instructor at the North York Judo Club.
Before the Pan American championship, held in Miami, Florida, Nihad said he was proud of his son, adding he'd already bought the plane tickets for Beijing.
