The Beach Business Improvement Area has chosen the artist who will paint a mural on a wall near Queen Street East and Wineva Avenue.

Muralist Daniel Seagrave was selected for the 50-foot-long project among a trio of top contenders.

More than a dozen noted artists applied to paint the mural commemorating the Scarboro Beach Amusement Park, which operated in the area from 1907 to the mid-1920s.

Charles Cameron, the local BIA chair, said his team especially enjoyed Seagrave's multi-dimensional art deco-inspired design.

"Daniel Seagrave's detailed sketch for this wall reflects a strong familiarity with the history of the Scarboro Amusement Park and a flair that suits the area," he said in a release.

"Following in the tradition established with our first mural at Queen and Lee, the BIA is continuing to enhance the natural beauty of the Beach."

Work on the wall, including power washing, priming, painting and then varnishing, is now underway and will continue to the end of October.

The mural is funded through a $5,000 mural grant from the city. Another $15,000 will be paid for by the BIA and its local businesses as well as individual and corporate sponsors.

Those willing to learn more about supporting the project should call 416-693-2242 or e-mail execdirector@BeachBIA.com. Donations of $10 or more are entitled to a tax receipt.

This mural is the second one the local business association has commissioned.

The project is similar in scope to another local initiative that took place last summer and fall, which also included a contest to find the best artist.

Beach artist Rudy Stussi and his son Errol were chosen to paint the mural that now graces the oft-defaced IGA wall at Queen Street East and Lee Avenue.
