While many Ontarians are currently without a family doctor, York Community Services (YCS) is looking to provide primary care for as many as 5,000 new local patients immediately."We're actively looking for new clients," said Steven Harrison, YCS executive director. "We're forging ahead very rapidly now."
With the hiring of two nurse practitioners now in place to work alongside three full-time physicians, YCS is able to accommodate York residents in need of free medical services at 1651 Keele St.
Harrison added that a new chiropodist (foot doctor) has also been recruited and able to take on 300 to 500 additional clients.
"That doesn't even include the new people we'll be hiring for the new satellite health centre," said Harrison, which will be located on the corner of Jane Street and Trethewey Drive.
The construction of the satellite health centre is expected to begin in October, added Harrison, who anticipated the grand opening to take place in January or February 2009.
Partner agencies that will set up various programs and services in the new community hub include COSTI Immigrant Services, Midaynta Community Services, Macaulay Child Development Centre, North York Community House and the Yorktown Child and Family Centre.
"That's our goal," Harrison said. "It's moving along."
In the meantime, local residents can receive basic medical services by calling YCS and leaving a message with general information including mailing address and contact number.
Staff will then take the patient through a 15-minute intake process, getting more information such as predisposed medical conditions and other family members who might require medical help. Subsequently, an appointment with a nurse practitioner or doctor will be set up within three to four weeks.
