Well we were hit by yet another snowstorm this week, leaving everyone dreading yet another go with the over-used snow shovel.

The only thing that heartens me as I trudge out the door to clear my sidewalk is the old saying for the month of March, which is "In like a lion, out like a lamb".

Hopefully once this weekend's storm is over, each day is going to be one less of winter and one more closer to spring.

One thing that you can do in order to make the month go faster is participate in one of the many interesting events taking place in East York.

While there is not a flower in sight at this point, there is nothing wrong with getting a head start on your garden by joining the East York Garden Club.

This award-winning group has been helping to keep the former borough green and colourful for decades by promoting some of the best gardening practices in Canada.

Meetings are held at 7:30 pm on the third Thursday of each month in the Stan Wadlow Community Centre, 373 Cedarvale Ave.

Another group with deep roots in the community is the East York Historical Society, which holds its meetings on the last Tuesday of March, May, September and November at 7:30 p.m. in the East York Civic Centre.

The next meeting will be held on March 25 and will feature noted historical author Dorothy Duncan, who will speak on pioneer foods and cooking techniques. The meeting will also include treats to sample.

The Canadian Federation of University Women has been representing Leaside and East York since 1995 and is a social network for women graduates.

General meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month at Northlea United Church, 125 Brentcliffe Rd.

The meetings feature guest speakers, with the next being presented by Sharon Hill of the Aphasia Centre on how her group is helping stroke and accident victims regain their communication skills.

If you are looking for something new and creative to do, drop by the next meeting of the Yorkshire Rose Quilter's Guild meeting on Wednesday, March 12.

The meeting takes place at the Danforth Mennonite Church, 2174 Danforth Ave., beginning at 7 p.m., with refreshments, speakers and demonstrations.

On Saturday, March 15, the Cosburn United Church, 1108 Greenwood Ave., is featuring a Taste of Ireland. Beginning at 5 p.m., Irish stew, biscuits and refreshments will be provided for $10 for adults and $5 for children five to 12, followed by live entertainment.

Don't forget this year's Agnes Macphail Award Ceremony, where an East York resident who has made an outstanding contribution as a volunteer is recognized. This will take place at the True Davidson council chambers of the East York Civic Centre, 850 Coxwell Ave. on Monday, March 24 at 7 p.m.

No matter how cold the wind blows or deep the snow piles up, as long as you are busy, winter is bearable.
