Last week I received a number of e-mails about animal-related events and thought some of you may be interested in one or more of them. Upcoming events include an opportunity to learn how to help injured birds, support a guinea pig garage sale, participate in a dog festival and watch Canine Special Olympics. The "pawsibilities" are endless.

Dog Days of Summer
Toronto Culture presents the Dog Days of Summer Aug. 26 from noon to 4 p.m. The family event for dogs, and the people who love them, will be held at Todmorden Mills museum, 67 Pottery Rd., just west of Broadview Avenue, and will include contests, agility demonstrations, trick training, paw printing, face painting (for kids, not dogs) and other good fun. The Canadian Kennel Club Good Neighbour testing for dogs will also be offered ($25 registration is required). For details, call Kelly at 416-396-2819.

Guinea Pig Garage Sale
Guinea Pigs R Us Rescue will be holding its second annual garage sale on Saturday, Sept. 8. It will be held 78 Muriel Ave., which is near Pape and Danforth avenues and begins at 9 a.m. It is looking for donations for the sale, with all money raised going toward medical expenses and proper nutrition for the animals in their care. Call 416-462-9725, e-mail guineapigsrusrescue@yahoo.ca or visit http://west.petfinder.com/shelters/guineapigsrus.html for details.

Canine Special Olympics
The Canine Wellness Centre at 45 Cranfield Rd., Unit 5 in East York, will be holding its Special Olympics on Sunday, Sept. 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The facility provides rehabilitation for dogs with neurological disorders and orthopedic and arthritic conditions. It offers swimming, reiki and massage therapy. The Special Olympics events include games, demonstrations, health tips, water tricks, races, workshops and a silent auction. Proceeds will benefit the Smiling Blue Skies Cancer Fund at the University of Guelph. Visit www.caninewellness.com for details.

Bird Rescue Training Workshops
Learn the basics of bird rescue, including bird handling and identification, bird collisions with buildings and assessment of bird injuries and rehabilitation. People can chose from two dates: Saturday, Sept. 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or Monday, Sept. 24 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Room 310 in Metro Hall, 55 John St. Hosted by FLAP, call 416-366-FLAP (3527), e-mail flap@flap.org or visit www.toronto.ca/lightsout for more information.
