It is now official. Torontonians and Canadians are heading to the polls Oct. 14.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced this morning, following his visit with the Governor General, that the 39th Parliament has been dissolved.
At dissolution, the Conservatives have 127 seats in the House of Commons, the Liberals have 95, the Bloc Quebecois 48 and the NDP 30. There are four Independent MPs (one of whom, Blair Wilson, is running for the Green party) and four vacant seats.
The announcement officially puts to a halt a series of planned byelections, including one scheduled for Sept. 22 in Don Valley West. Voters will now select that riding's representative as part of the regular vote.
Currently in Toronto ridings, 19 seats are held by Liberals, three by New Democrats and one, Don Valley West, is currently vacant after Liberal John Godfrey stepped down earlier this year. There are currently no Conservative seats in Toronto.
