Police and the fire marshal’s office are investigating the cause of a fatal townhouse blaze in the Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue area.

Fire crews rushed to 21 Khedive Ave. shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday for a report of smoke billowing out of a window.

Phyllis Dubrofsky, 67, was found dead by firefighters in a second-floor bedroom as they were extinguishing the flames.

“We believe her death is related to the fire,” said Toronto Police Det. Sgt. Jim Sproxton, adding foul play isn’t suspected.

Smoke alarms were found in Dubrofsky’s home, but it’s not yet known whether or not they were working.

Six fire trucks and 24 firefighters were at the scene of the single-alarm blaze, which caused $20,000 damage.

The two-storey townhouse was cordoned off with yellow police tape for the investigation. A second-floor window was shattered.
